What studies found

Folate's roles in making DNA and red blood cells are well established. Methylfolate in supplements is absorbed as well as or better than folic acid. People with a common MTHFR gene variant might benefit more from methylfolate, but the research is inconclusive. There's no evidence that taking much more than you need gives extra benefits.

How much is in our products

ProductAmount
5-MTHF Methylfolate 3 mg (5 mg DFE) per 3-capsule serving

In studies: Adults need 400 mcg DFE of folate a day. The upper limit for folate from supplements, including methylfolate, is 1,000 mcg a day.

Our 3 mg (5 mg DFE) is three times the 1,000 mcg upper limit for supplements, so talk to your doctor before taking it.

Who should take care

High folate can hide low vitamin B12 in blood tests while nerve damage continues, so ask your doctor to check your B12. Folate can interact with methotrexate, some seizure medicines (phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproate) and sulfasalazine. Our serving is above the upper limit for supplements, so check with your doctor first, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or take any of these medicines.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting a supplement if you take any medicine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
