Evidence
C A few small, short trials; mostly not placebo-controlled
Studied for
Blood sugar

What studies found

In small trials lasting 2 weeks to a year, banaba extracts were linked to lower blood sugar readings, mostly in people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. Most studies had 10 to 100 people, only two used a placebo, and several used blends or extracts that weren't standardized. A review of this research says more human studies on both benefits and safety are needed.

How much is in our products

ProductAmount
Blood Sugar Complex 50 mg (1% corosolic acid) per 2-capsule serving

In studies: 32–48 mg a day of a 1% corosolic acid extract in one 2-week trial; 10 mg a day of corosolic acid in others.

Our 50 mg of 1% extract (about 0.5 mg corosolic acid) is close to the lowest-dose trial and far below the 10 mg of corosolic acid used in others.

Who should take care

Banaba may add to the effect of insulin and other blood sugar medicines, raising the risk of low blood sugar. One case report linked banaba to kidney injury in a person with reduced kidney function who was also taking the pain reliever diclofenac; its role wasn't proven. Ask your doctor first if you have kidney problems or take blood sugar medicines. There isn't enough research for pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting a supplement if you take any medicine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
